Family, food and fun!
At Worth Unlimited Huddersfield, we're passionate about family, food and fun and this summer we had plenty of opportunity to enjoy all three!
The Summer has been an all round hit for Worth Unlimited Huddersfield. Our normal Holiday Lunch Club ran as usual, but with an added twist. With “Fit and Fed” funding from Street Games, we were able to partner with the sports coaches from Huddersfield Town Foundation (who also funded the food for the lunch club), to provide football and other sports activities for the children of Lowerhouses. With 963 cooked dinners served to children and families over the six weeks, there was a mountain of washing up to be done, so huge thanks go to the volunteers who stayed in the kitchen clearing up and then tidying the hall when everyone else was getting back home.
It wasn’t all good news this summer - the community BBQ was under threat because the prolonged heatwave (which sadly added to the wild fires on the moors) meant that all BBQs and open fires were banned in Kirklees! What was going to happen? How can you have a community BBQ with no fire? All was not lost! Our intrepid worker Wendy and a trusty team of local parents rustled up lunch bags and over 200 members of the community turned out for the day and enjoyed a picnic.
The highlight of the summer for Wendy and her volunteers was that Worth Unlimited was named as sponsor of the match ball for Huddersfield Town Football Club’s first game of the season. They donated Club shirts for the young volunteers (who gave up 18 days of their holiday to cook food for the community) and organised a trip to the game for 10 people - which included standing in the middle of the pitch as the ball was presented. A day to remember!
The new term is shaping up to continue the fun of the summer. With our regular programme of activities back on (cooking clubs, craft clubs and games nights) but with the added offering of an older people’s lunch club and an adult craft morning, we are in full swing and looking forward to autumn and winter activities.
